What is yoga? More importantly, what is it that you hope to gain by practicing yoga?

If you have navigated your way to this site – and are reading these very words – you have already started a quest of sorts by asking simple, yet important questions. Perhaps you are a novice, who knows nothing at all about yoga. Or perhaps you are a longtime yoga enthusiast, looking to expand your knowledge. No matter how much you already know or where you are from – whether it is London, Dubai, Beijing or Thiruvananthapuram – we are all, inevitably, on the same path, seeking the same inner peace.

Okay, let’s consider the first question. What is yoga? The first thing that comes to your mind would be Asanas or postures. That, yes, is a part, but this science is far deeper than merely that. In its original Sanskrit form, the word “yoga” literally means “yoke”, from the root word yuj, meaning to join or unite. Whenever I teach students, I always start by telling them that our goal is to unite our body, breath, mind, intellect, and (ultimately) our soul so that our whole being is one – calm, lucid, and enlightened. Of course, I realize, this sounds like a rather daunting and ambitious goal!

But here is the silver lining: students are always amazed to discover that what they seek most of all – inner peace – is often much more attainable than they ever realized. The beauty of yoga is that the key to making everything work is to relax totally with our practice and to experience the depth of what we are doing…
